Mpraeso Member of Parliament, Davis Opoku Ansah, has openly defied the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) directive by throwing his full support behind Nana Akua Afriyie in the contentious Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun set for Friday, July 11.
Amidst intensifying internal friction within the ruling party, Akua Afriyie has chosen to contest the rerun despite clear instructions from the NPP’s national leadership to boycott the process. Her decision has drawn both quiet support and public endorsement—none more vocal than that of Opoku Ansah.
Speaking in an exclusive interview on Channel One TV’s Citiuation Room on Thursday, July 10, the outspoken Mpraeso lawmaker confirmed he is actively campaigning for Afriyie on the ground, fully aware that he risks disciplinary action from the party.
“Akua Afriyie will win tomorrow, and when she wins, we should all be sanctioned. We are ready for it. If you think that the people of Ablekuma should not have proper representation, we believe in the NPP that our candidate is better than that of the NDC,” he declared.
He criticized the party’s position as counterproductive, arguing that Ablekuma North is a long-standing NPP stronghold that deserves to be fiercely contested—not abandoned.
The rebellion against the party’s directive appears to be gaining traction, with Nhyiaeso MP, Dr. Stephen Amoah, also seen on the campaign trail for Akua Afriyie. His involvement further fuels speculation that cracks are widening within the NPP ahead of the rerun.
As tensions escalate, all eyes will be on Ablekuma North on Friday—not just for the outcome of the poll, but for how the party handles the growing dissent in its own ranks.
