Ghana has named Madam Meredith Naa Odarkai Lamptey-Addy, daughter of the late business magnate David Lamptey, as the country’s new Permanent Delegate to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in Paris.
At a formal ceremony held in Accra, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa officially handed over her credentials, offering warm congratulations on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama and the Ghanaian people.
“We have no doubt that, looking at your impressive profile and outstanding track record, you will be a worthy representative of Ghana at UNESCO. President Mahama has reposed enormous confidence in you, and we trust that you will excel in your new role,” Mr Ablakwa stated.
The Minister pledged the full backing of the Foreign Ministry, noting that the government would work closely with her to enhance Ghana’s engagement in UNESCO’s global mission.
“UNESCO’s work significantly influences our development as a people. At a time when the world is grappling with climate change, green transitions, and the need to integrate science into policymaking, your role will be pivotal,” Mr Ablakwa said.
He further stressed the importance of defending Ghana’s cultural legacy and identity, urging the new delegate to be an outspoken advocate for preserving endangered local languages and promoting Ghanaian values on the global education stage.
“UNESCO is instrumental in identifying and preserving heritage sites of which Ghana has a few. Your role will help ensure that these cultural assets are protected for future generations,” the Minister added.
In response, Madam Lamptey-Addy expressed appreciation for the confidence placed in her by the President.
“I promise to discharge my duties diligently. I will represent Ghana to the best of my ability and make the country proud.” she indicated.
A lawyer and public servant, Lamptey-Addy is an alumna of the University of Ghana and the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA). She previously contested the National Democratic Congress parliamentary primaries in the Klottey-Korle constituency.
