Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has criticized former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s leadership.
The NDC stalwart asserted that Mr. Akufo-Addo’s administration, which ended on January 6, 2025, has created a negative perception of elderly people in governance.
Speaking to journalists during the ongoing Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun on Friday, July 11, Gbande argued that the president’s performance in office has tainted the belief that older leaders like the NPP’s Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, bring wisdom and development.
He said the poor state of infrastructure and high levels of poverty in the constituency reflect the failure of the Akufo-Addo-led NPP administration.
“You know, President Akufo-Addo has left a deficit of, excuse my language, old age. We used to think that people who are old were very good in development, but clearly, President Akufo-Addo has left a very bad legacy for that age group,” Gbande said.
He added that the people of Ablekuma North now prefer a “quality candidate” like the NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn, who has the energy and capacity to address their needs.
“The people needed somebody who is energetic, somebody who is strong, to rally the youth in this constituency around,” he noted.
His comment comes as voters in 19 polling stations return to the polls on Friday, July 11, to decide who becomes their Member of Parliament after six months of impasse.
