The Minister for the Interior, Mr. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has inaugurated the newly constituted Governing Board of the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (NACSA), tasking its members to address the increasing threat of illicit arms in the country.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony on Thursday in Accra, the minister expressed deep concern over the rising number of gun-related incidents across Ghana, particularly during traditional celebrations, funerals, and social gatherings, which have led to unnecessary loss of life.

“These disturbing occurrences point to a dangerous trend which amplifies the increasing availability and misuse of small arms in our society,” the Minister said.

The Minister also called on the new Board to enhance research and data collection to understand better the trends and networks driving the illicit arms trade in Ghana.

He urged them to bring their expertise and dedication to bear on the Commission’s work, emphasising the need for deep-rooted patriotism and a sense of duty to safeguard the nation’s peace and security.

The Chairman of the newly inaugurated Board, Mr. Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi-Dorani, reaffirmed the Board’s commitment to working collaboratively with stakeholders to shape effective policy and find lasting solutions to arms proliferation.

He called on all stakeholders to support the Board’s efforts in promoting peace and security in Ghana.
