Former Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has claimed that she was physically assaulted by thugs thought to be affiliated with the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the just-held rerun of parliamentary election in Ablekuma North constituency.

In a post on her Facebook page, the former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West described her assailants as “NDC machomen” who attacked her while she was peacefully observing proceedings at one of the polling centres.

“I wish to inform the general public that while peacefully observing the ongoing election rerun in Ablekuma North Constituency, I was physically assaulted by NDC machomen. During this unfortunate incident, my personal mobile phone was forcibly taken.

As a result, any calls, messages, social media posts, or broadcasts originating from my number from the time of incidence onwards should be treated as unauthorized and not from me. I kindly urge everyone to disregard any such communication until I regain full control of my digital platforms.”

Video footage showed the former Awutu Senya East MP being thrown to the ground and allegedly stomped on in the chest and groin area by unidentified males before police officers stepped in.

According to eyewitnesses, the attackers overran the security detail at the St. Peter’s Society Methodist Church polling booth and attacked a number of political personalities, including the former Member of Parliament.

The incident has sparked numerous discussions over the efficacy of security personnel used during elections as the police officers assigned were not armed and had no riot control tools.
