Former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Muhammadu Buhari has died at age 82.

Buhari passed away in the afternoon of Sunday, July 13, 2025, at a clinic in London, where he had been receiving medical care, his family confirmed in a statement shared on his official X account by spokesperson Garba Shehu.

“Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un. The family … has announced the passing of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin,” the statement read.

A retired Major General, Buhari first ascended to power as military ruler from 1983 to 1985, and later became president in 2015, making history by defeating an incumbent for the first time.

He served two terms in civilian office, from 2015 to 2023, during which he also held the position of Minister of Petroleum Resources in both military and civilian capacities.

During his presidency, Buhari’s policies focused on an anti-corruption agenda, fighting the Boko Haram insurgency across Nigeria’s northeast, and managing a nation facing persistent economic hardship.

His final years in office were marred by frequent illnesses, resulting in prolonged absences from official duties and treatment trips to the UK, leading to widespread public and political speculation regarding his health.

News of his passing has been met with a wave of reactions on social media, with many Nigerians mourning the loss and reflecting on his tenure.

Further details on funeral and burial arrangements are expected to be released soon.
