A leading voice within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Razak Kojo Opoku, has thrown the party into fresh internal debate after openly calling for a change in leadership direction ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Dr. Opoku, a staunch member of the Bryan Acheampong for President 2028 campaign, has urged the NPP to consider a strategic “substitution” at the top of its hierarchy — a move he says is necessary following the party’s bruising defeat in the 2024 polls.
In a pointed statement released this week, Dr. Opoku drew a bold comparison between the party’s decision to embrace an “overtaking” in its 2024 flagbearer contest and what he now sees as the need to correct course.
“If overtaking was allowed, then substitution is permissible,” he declared, arguing that the NPP must confront its mistakes and embrace a leadership overhaul if it hopes to regain power in 2028.
Though he stopped short of naming any individuals, the implications of his remarks were clear — the party, he suggested, must not hesitate to sideline past choices in favour of new, more promising leadership.
Dr. Opoku’s comments come at a delicate moment for the NPP, which is still reeling from its electoral setback and searching for a clear path forward. His call has rekindled simmering questions about succession politics, internal democracy, and the party’s readiness to rebuild from defeat.
His statement is already generating ripples within party ranks and political circles, fuelling speculation that the Bryan Acheampong campaign is positioning itself as the rallying point for a fresh NPP resurgence.
Whether the party embraces “substitution” as boldly as it once accepted “overtaking” may define its prospects heading into 2028.
