Gallant Cadres demand arrest of Hawa Koomson for using pepper spray during Ablekuma North rerun chaos

The Gallant Cadres of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have condemned what they describe as a reckless display of indiscipline by former Minister of State, Madame Hawa Koomson, over her alleged use of pepper spray and the chaos that ensued during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun.

In a strongly worded statement issued and signed on Sunday, July 13, 2025, the group expressed outrage over the incident, calling it a stark reminder of what they claim is the culture of violence and intimidation that defined the Nana Addo-Bawumia administration.

They described the events as a serious setback to Ghana’s democratic values. “What transpired at Ablekuma North was deplorable. No Ghanaian should ever be subjected to assault during an election, as violence has no place in a democratic society,” they emphasized.

The group questioned why, despite the presence of prominent New Patriotic Party figures such as Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, Bryan Acheampong, and Dr. Okoe Boye—who monitored the election without incident—Hawa Koomson became the target of confrontation. According to the Cadres, her history of alleged involvement in violent electoral activities may have influenced the public reaction.

They are now calling on state security agencies to take immediate action. “We will not stand idly by while individuals like Hawa Koomson compromise the integrity of our electoral process,” they emphasized, urging the authorities to arrest and investigate her for her alleged role in voter intimidation and violence.

Institutionalization Of Political Violence Is The Cause Of Ablekuma North Election Rerun Violence

The Gallant Cadres of NDC condemns the egregious actions of former Minister of State, Hawa Koomson, who was seen possessing pepper spray at the Ablekuma North rerun polling station. This incident is a stark reminder of the culture of violence and intimidation that the Nana Addo-Bawumia Government institutionalized during their eight-year tenure.

Hawa Koomson’s actions are part of a larger pattern of violence and brutality, including her infamous Kasoa voter registration center shooting incident in 2020, where she fired warning shots, causing injuries and damage. Her actions have led to the loss of lives, injuries, and fear among citizens, making her a symbol of disunity and electoral violence.

Truth is that if one fails to do the right thing expected of a leader but protect wrong, it nurtures into a culture of wrong habit. At Ayawaso West Wuogon, bicycle chains were tagged to a stick was used to beat people by the thugs of New Patriotic Party (NPP) in uniforms, and brutalized even a sitting MP. In Techiman South people were killed in 2020 general election and no justice was sought for the dead. Again in 2020 same Ablekuma, a witness at the collation center was shot dead by an NPP thug. This thug was protected as a national security personnel. Same 2020 general elections witnessed shooting at NDC supporters during the green walk when they were passing in front of the NPP Party office in Odododiodio constituency. In Ayawaso South in 2024 another gun battle ensued during the green walk at Mamobi leading to the lost of 3 lives.

Interestingly, no one condemned that act by then NPP Majority .

Even in Winneba, during 2024 elections, a brawl between the NPP and NDC led to the brutal beating of 3 pro NDC supporters. In Assin North, Delta forces chased Malik Basintale to kill him before he run away and was protected by the Army personnel. At Assin Breku NPP card bearing member was seen brutally beating an a NDC Poling station agent.

Hawa Koomson fired live bullet and killed someone in the process, but for the intervention of the bullet proof vest; she would have killed her own bodyguard in the process, and no one said anything about it.

In 2024,Hawa koomson’s boys went to shoot and killed an NDC Kasoa Youth Organizer Candidate

The Gallant Cadres of NDC is asking why did Hawa Koomson go to Ablekuma North even with pepper spray in the first place?

People shouldn’t forget that Ghanaians are still very pained and families of those who were victims of election violence are looking for revenge because nothing has been done to those who committed the act.

When President Mahama assumed office he ordered a probe into those killings in election 2020 by the then IGP George Akuffo Dampare but what happened………. Part of the reasons for his removal.

These are early days yet.The anger of past wrongs which stories remained untold is still fresh on our minds. Clearly, the EVIL MEN DO LIVES AFTER THEM and SPARING THE ROD ALWAYS SPOILS THE CHILD.

The bad precedence we set yesterday has become the roadmap for today. If we don’t act fast before Akwatia by-elections, similar acts of violence might occur.

The death of Comrade Tuariq, who succumbed to injuries sustained during a brutal attack by Hawa Koomson’s thugs, and the recent shooting of two NDC supporters, one of whom lost his life and the other his leg, are stark reminders of the estwhile government’s failure to protect citizens’ rights.

What actually happened at Ablekuma North was shameful. No Ghanaian should ever be attacked during an election. This is because violence should have no place in a democracy.

But, we can not pretend this came out of nowhere. This is the result of years of impunity, arrogance, and the dangerous belief that power is permanent.

When Charlotte Osei was removed and denied all her benefits, that was a dangerous precedence but the NPP mocked Ghanaians. When Domelevo was forced out, we cautioned again. You laughed. The Npp cheered when Sam George was assaulted.

They applauded when Hannah Bissiw was humiliated.

Nana Addo and Bawumia used their power not to serve, but to subjugate—treating opponents like vile animals to the chariots of kings. When they say “karma is from Kyebi,” Nana Addo didn’t understand.

Kennedy Agyapong was there. NDC diehards applauded him. Some even queued up to take photos. Bryan Acheampong walked freely—untouched. Dr. Okoe Boye laughed and mingled with NDC supporters like family. So why Hawa Koomson?

It was widely known that the late terrorist of Kasoa, Kofa, was your close associate. He committed unspeakable crimes in Kasoa and its environs but walked free. He and his boys killed many people, including my a guy called Nkatie.

They shot him and hid his body near the Jei River. His decomposed body was found weeks later. You heard it. Some arrests were made, but the Nana Addo Bawumia government was in power, so nothing happened.

Today, they walk free, my dear mother, you said nothing

As Martin Niemöller once said:“First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—

Because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—

Because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—

Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.”

We don’t rejoice in your pain. But we won’t act surprised either. You empowered thuggery. You stormed a courtroom and attacked a pregnant judge. And Chairman Wontumi proudly defended it.

The Gallant Cadres of NDC demands that the State Security Services immediately arrest Hawa Koomson for her role in sparking violence and intimidating voters. We will not stand idly by while individuals like Hawa Koomson undermine the integrity of our electoral process.

The Gallant Cadres of NDC is asking again, who first brought sugar cane to the house? It is believed that the NPP has some some instincts within them, unless you equalize their action with action, they see you as a fool or a weakling. That something in them is ATTACK.

The NPP will physically attack you during by-elections and elections. They will attack you in studios with insults and as soon as you retaliate, they will be the first to point yours out. Take the attack on Hawa Koomson and their Deputy Organizer during the Ablekuma North by-election for example.

Their defense is that two wrongs don’t make it right. Really?

When did they see the attacks by Hawa Koomson and on Hon. Sam George as wrong? So they agree that they committed the first wrong? Who brought sugar cane to cause flies in the house?. Then they say President Mahama said he is coming to reset Ghana and they question whether this is the reset we voted for. Unless we reset the NPP with some kind of equalization and canes, they will never be reset.

The New Patriotic Party want to turn NDC’s Ablekuma North victory into something else. But the NDC must be focused and deliver to the good people of Ghana. Our next victory is at Akwatia and we should leave no stone unturned.

The NPP can cry all the cries they want, that should be none of our business. Our business is to make good use of our two-thirds majority in parliament and reduce their number in 2028.That’s the goal. That’s the focus.
