Member of Parliament for Akim Swedru, Kennedy Osei Nyarko, has taken aim at President John Dramani Mahama, accusing him of betraying his own promise to “reset” Ghana’s political environment following violent scenes that marred the recent Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun.
In a strongly worded Facebook post, the MP condemned what he called the “brutish and thuggery behavior” allegedly exhibited by members of the ruling party during the polls, describing the events as a disturbing setback for the country’s democratic progress.
“Mr. President, you promised the Ghanaian people that you were going to reset the country. A reset cannot be about this brutish and thuggery behavior of your party folks,” he wrote.
Nyarko expressed deep concern over reports of assaults and acts of intimidation against civilians, stating that such violence casts a dark shadow over Ghana’s democratic values and undermines the legitimacy of the electoral process.
He warned against normalizing impunity in politics, cautioning that a cycle of revenge and lawlessness would only fracture national unity further. “The wrongs of yesterday cannot be the justification for what is happening today,” he said, calling for restraint and a commitment to democratic principles.
“Today is certainly going to be engraved in your name as the saddest day of our democracy,” he stated, directing his words at President Mahama.
The Akim Swedru MP called on the President to act decisively to restore peace and accountability, stressing that failure to clamp down on political violence would be “a grave injustice” to the Ghanaian people.
“We cannot continue to govern this country with such impunity from some political thuggish who always take advantage of the system to perpetuate crimes against innocent citizens,” he added.
He ended his statement with an appeal for unity and a departure from politics driven by vengeance. Kennedy Osei Nyarko urged President Mahama to rise above partisanship and take bold steps to safeguard the sanctity of Ghana’s democracy.
