University of Ghana lifts ban on social gatherings as COVID-19 cases decline

The University of Ghana has officially lifted its temporary ban on social gatherings, following a marked reduction in reported COVID-19 cases on campus.

In a statement released by the Office of Student Affairs on Monday, July 14, the University confirmed that the restriction—originally imposed on Thursday, June 26—had been revoked with immediate effect.

“The Office of Student Affairs, in consultation with the University Health Services and University Management, wishes to inform the entire university community that the restriction on social gatherings on the University of Ghana campus due to the resurgence of COVID-19 has been lifted with immediate effect,” the statement read.

The earlier restrictions, which came amid fears of a COVID-19 resurgence, had put a halt to all gatherings and events organized by student groups, academic departments, halls of residence, and religious associations. The ban was part of a suite of emergency interventions aimed at curbing the spread of the virus within the university community.

Now, with the situation under control, student bodies such as the Students’ Representative Council (SRC), Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG), Junior Common Rooms (JCRs), religious organizations, and departmental associations have been given the green light to resume their programs and weekly gatherings.

Despite the easing of restrictions, the University reiterated the importance of remaining vigilant, urging students and staff to continue observing all COVID-19 safety protocols.

“Note that all COVID-19 protocols should be adhered to. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated,” the statement stressed.

The University’s decision marks a cautious but hopeful return to normal campus life, with authorities closely monitoring the situation to ensure that the gains made in managing the virus are not reversed.
