Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku
The Member of Parliament for Asunafo South, Eric Opoku, is set to contest the flagbearer position of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2028 general election.
According to Omanhene Kwabena Asante of Asempa FM, his sources confirm that the current Minister for Food and Agriculture is prepared to join the race, which includes prominent party figures such as the current Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, as possible contenders.
“This is confirmed. My own fellow Ahafo man, Eric Opoku, will contest. Julius Debrah from the Eastern Region will also contest,” Omanhene stated.
According to the journalist, the MP and the Chief of Staff have moved beyond consideration and are firm in their decision.
With President John Dramani Mahama set to complete his constitutionally allowed term limit in 2029, the NDC is poised for a competitive internal contest.
Eric Opoku was first elected MP in 2004, lost his seat in 2008, and was re-elected in 2012, 2016, 2020, and 2024, garnering 57.40% of the votes in the latter.
He served as Deputy Brong Ahafo Regional Minister (2009–2013) and is currently Ghana’s Minister for Food and Agriculture (appointed January 2025). He has been a ranking member of the Food, Agriculture, and Cocoa Affairs Committee.
