Drug possession: Court refuses trader bail for the second time

An Accra Circuit Court has, for the second time, refused bail to a trader accused of possessing 30 wraps of dried substances suspected to be narcotic drugs.

Alhassan Shiabu’s plea was again not taken when he appeared before the Court on July 14, 2025, following his initial appearance in June.

The Court, presided over by Samuel Bright Acquah, deferred proceedings as a forensic report on the substance is still pending.

Shiabu is expected to reappear on July 22, 2025.

Presenting the facts, Police Chief Inspector Ramatu Asumah told the Court that on June 20, 2025, the Accra Regional Police Command conducted a joint operation at a known drug peddling area, or “wee base,” at Korle near Abossey Okai.

During the operation, Shiabu was arrested, and a bag containing 30 wrappers of substances suspected to be Indian hemp was retrieved from him.

“Upon interrogation, the accused denied ownership of the exhibits, and he stated that on the day of the operation, he went to visit a friend by name ‘Antarrow’ at Korle, and the friend left his bag at his place on seeing the police,” Chief Inspector Asumah stated.

She said Shiabu allegedly picked up the said bag and was subsequently arrested.

The Court was informed that he has since failed to assist the Police in locating the said “Antarrow.”

Shiabu has been charged with possession of narcotic drugs and remains in custody pending further investigations.
