The Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Lawyer Nana Agyei Baffour, has sharply criticised Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga for what he described as a careless and dismissive attitude towards the violence that marred the recent Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun.

Speaking in Parliament, the Majority Leader sparked outrage when he referred to the violent incidents as “child’s play,” a comment that has since drawn heavy condemnation from across the political divide.

Reacting to the statement, the Manhyia South MP expressed deep disappointment, stating that Ayariga’s remarks were both irresponsible and disrespectful to those affected by the violence.

“It is unacceptable for a national leader to downplay such a serious incident,” he said. “Violence in any form must never be trivialised, especially when it undermines the democratic process and endangers lives.”

The Ablekuma North rerun was marred by scenes of chaos and violence, prompting widespread concern about electoral security and the ability of law enforcement agencies to protect voters and uphold order.

The Manhyia South MP warned that such incidents erode public trust and called on the Majority Leader to adopt a more measured and responsible tone when addressing national issues.

“Leaders must lead by example. It is our duty to promote peace, unity, and stability—not to joke about matters that pose serious risks to our democracy,” he added.

The MP’s remarks underscore the growing anxiety over political violence and the urgent need for leadership that prioritises national cohesion and accountability.

He concluded by urging all political actors to condemn violence in all its forms and support stronger mechanisms to ensure peaceful and credible elections.
