Death toll rises to 11 in Akyem Wenchi Mining pit collapse as rescue efforts ntensify

The tragic collapse of a mining pit in Akyem Wenchi, in Ghana’s Eastern Region, has claimed at least 11 lives, with dozens more injured and several miners still feared trapped beneath the rubble.

Emergency teams from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service, and the Ambulance Service are racing against time in a high-stakes rescue operation, digging through debris in hopes of finding survivors.

The full scale of the disaster is still unfolding, as frantic efforts continue around the clock under tense and dangerous conditions. Eyewitnesses report harrowing scenes of chaos, grief, and desperation as relatives and colleagues wait anxiously at the site for news of their loved ones.

The cause of the collapse remains unclear, but authorities have launched an investigation to determine what triggered the fatal cave-in at the illegal mining site.

This latest disaster throws a harsh spotlight once again on the deadly risks associated with illegal and unregulated mining in Ghana—an industry that has claimed dozens of lives in recent years, often under similar conditions.

Officials have yet to confirm the number of miners still missing, but local sources suggest the death toll could rise further as rescue teams dig deeper into the collapsed pit.

This is a developing story.
