The search for victims believed to be trapped in a collapsed galamsey pit at Akyem Wenchi in the Denkyembour District of the Eastern Region has officially ended, with no bodies found.

Rescue efforts led by the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), in collaboration with local residents, were carried out over several days following the pit collapse.

Despite initial fears and sustained attempts to locate potential victims, the operation concluded without the recovery of any bodies, bringing a difficult chapter to a close for the affected community.

The cause of the collapse is believed to be linked to illegal mining activities in the area. Authorities are currently investigating the incident to establish the exact cause and determine the next course of action.

Meanwhile, residents remain worried about the safety risks associated with galamsey operations in the region.

Speaking to some aggrieved youth of Akyem Wenchi, they noted that the youth helped in rescue efforts immediately after the incident happened. They urged the general public to refrain from labeling the people of Wenckye as bad people.

“We helped in the rescue efforts immediately after the incident happened. We urge everyone not to label the people of Wenchi as bad people,” said one youth.
