Nursing trainee ‘alawa’ will be paid regularly henceforth — Health Minister assures

The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has assured that allowances for nursing trainee students will now be paid regularly.

For years, students entitled to these allowances have complained of delays, with some staging demonstrations before receiving partial payments.

In some cases, students reportedly completed their courses without receiving the allowances, according to their association.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Friday, July 18, Mr. Akandoh said the John Dramani Mahama-led administration intends to sustain the momentum following the release of six months’ arrears.

“As I indicated in my submission, we are going to maintain the momentum. It’s something we will continue to do going forward,” the Minister stated.

This assurance comes after the Ministry of Health announced the disbursement of GHS 462 million to cover six months of allowances for 120,000 nursing trainees nationwide.

The move fulfils a key campaign promise made by President Mahama.

The Ministry noted that payments, which began on Thursday, July 17, will continue until next Friday as part of a broader government initiative to provide financial relief and support to students in nursing training colleges.

“This development marks a significant milestone in enhancing the welfare of nursing trainees and boosting the morale of future health professionals,” the Ministry said in a statement.

It added that the intervention aligns with ongoing efforts to strengthen the health sector by ensuring critical human resources receive the support needed during their training.
