NPP scraps super delegates system ahead of 2026 presidential primaries

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially abolished its super delegates system as part of major reforms aimed at strengthening internal democracy.

The decision, announced at the party’s 2025 Annual Delegates Conference on July 19, 2025, involves an amendment to Article 13(1)(9) of the party’s constitution. It means all presidential aspirants will now contest directly before the full electoral college, eliminating the pre-selection process previously conducted by a limited group of party elites.

Party officials say the move is intended to enhance transparency, ensure fairness, and broaden participation in the flagbearer selection process ahead of the party’s presidential primaries in January 2026.

The 2025 New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Delegates Conference took place at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium on Saturday, July 19, 2025.

The conference brought together delegates from across the country to deliberate and decide on key party matters ahead of the selection of a flagbearer, scheduled for January 31, 2026.

Among the key agenda items was a proposal to amend aspects of the party’s constitution, including suggestions to expand the electoral college.
