I disagree with decision to elect NPP communication directors — Ahiagbah fights party

The National Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has expressed his disagreement with the party’s decision to make his current position an elected one.

The opposition party held its first Extraordinary National Delegates Conference on Saturday, July 19, to consider reforms since losing power in the 2024 elections, including amendments to certain parts of its constitution.

Among the amendments approved from various proposals by party members was the decision to elect its Director of Communications instead of appointing one.

However, speaking on Accra-based GHOne TV on Monday, July 21, Ahiagbah argued that the position requires technical expertise and should not be subjected to political selection.

“I disagree with the amendment to elect NPP’s Director of Communications. That role requires a certain level of expertise, not political selection,” he said.

Following the conference, some members of the party accused the leadership of staging cheers for former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to make him appear more acceptable than other flagbearer hopefuls.

But according to Ahiagbah, the decision to grant Dr. Bawumia access to the inner perimeter of the University of Ghana Sports Stadium was due to his status as former Vice President and his seniority after former Presidents Kufuor and Akufo-Addo, who were both absent.

“Dr. Bawumia is next in seniority after Presidents Kufuor and Akufo-Addo. That’s why we accorded him that respect at the conference,” he explained.
