The Ablekuma branch of the National Pensioners’ Association (NPA) of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has marked its 10th anniversary with a call on workers, particularly the self-employed, to prioritise their future by enrolling on the SSNIT pension scheme.
The milestone celebration was climaxed on Sunday, July 20, 2025, at the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG), Bethel Congregation in Ablekuma Abease.
Speaking during the ceremony, the Chairman of the Ablekuma branch of the association, Mr. Emmanuel Patterson, urged all Ghanaians, especially those working in the informal sector, to consider joining the SSNIT scheme to ensure financial security during retirement.
“Enrolling on the SSNIT Scheme is one of the best decisions any worker can make. It has really helped us. Many of us do not need to depend on our children for survival,” Mr. Patterson stated. “At the end of every month, we simply go to the bank for our pension. I will encourage everyone, especially the self-employed, to enrol on SSNIT now. The scheme is flexible and with consistent contributions, you can live comfortably in old age without being a burden to anyone.”
Mr. Patterson praised SSNIT for relieving many pensioners from financial hardship and highlighted its crucial role in promoting dignity among the elderly.
He said the association’s decade-long journey has been one of mutual support and advocacy for better welfare for retired workers.
To commemorate the anniversary, the association organised a series of activities, including a health walk, fun games, and a health talk session. These events aimed to promote social interaction, physical well-being and good dietary habits among members.
During the grand ceremony, awards were presented to members who have been with the association since its formation in 2014, individuals aged 80 years and above and winners of the anniversary fun games.
Special recognition was also given to members who have consistently shown commitment and dedication to the growth of the association over the years.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Patterson spoke positively about the association’s relationship with SSNIT, describing it as fruitful. However, he also took the opportunity to advocate for further enhancements in the pension system, especially in the area of healthcare access and increased monthly benefits.
“We have a good relationship with SSNIT. Though there have been some increases in our pension benefits, we will still ask for more,” he said. “Old age comes with various health challenges, so we also appeal to SSNIT to enrol more health facilities under the Pensioners’ Medical Scheme. That way, members can visit nearby hospitals for regular check-ups without stress. We need better access to quality healthcare.”
Mr. Patterson added that while financial support is essential, healthcare remains a top concern for aged members. He called for reforms that would allow pensioners to enjoy medical support more conveniently and affordably across various regions in Ghana.
Also present at the ceremony was the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the National Pensioners’ Association, Mr. Emmanuel Okai, who commended the Ablekuma branch for its vibrant spirit, unity and consistency over the past decade.
He encouraged members to remain active and supportive of each other while continuing to advocate for better welfare and benefits for all pensioners.
Mr. Okai said, “I also want to take this opportunity to appeal to every Ghanaian, especially self-employed individuals, to enrol in the SSNIT scheme. The future is unpredictable, and this scheme is a solid investment for your old age. It ensures that you can live in dignity without relying on others.”
The 10th anniversary celebration was filled with joy, gratitude, and a sense of accomplishment. The members of the Ablekuma NPA-SSNIT branch took the opportunity to reflect on their achievements and renew their commitment to supporting one another through the challenges of ageing.
