Ewurabena Aubynn to be sworn in as Ablekuma North MP today after narrow rerun victory

Ewurabena Aubynn, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament-elect for Ablekuma North, will be officially sworn into office today, Tuesday, July 22, 2025, by the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin.

Her swearing-in follows a dramatic and high-stakes rerun election held across 19 polling stations in the constituency. The Electoral Commission had nullified the original December 2024 results after widespread allegations of electoral irregularities, including unsigned pink sheets and discrepancies in vote tallies.

The rerun, conducted earlier this month under heightened scrutiny, saw Aubynn clinch victory with 34,090 votes—edging out her New Patriotic Party (NPP) rival, Akua Afriyie, who garnered 33,881 votes. The slim margin capped a tense contest and delivered a symbolic and strategic win for the opposition NDC.

Aubynn’s entry into Parliament secures a crucial two-thirds majority for the NDC in the 275-member House—a development that significantly shifts the legislative balance of power. With this majority, the NDC is now positioned to steer constitutional amendments, push through major policy reforms, and exert stronger control over parliamentary business.

Today’s swearing-in ceremony is expected to draw high-level attendance, including senior party officials, lawmakers, and invited dignitaries. Beyond the ceremonial significance, the event underscores the NDC’s growing influence and marks a decisive moment in the party’s 2025 legislative agenda.

The outcome at Ablekuma North not only cements Aubynn’s political rise but also serves as a powerful reminder of the volatile nature of Ghana’s electoral battlegrounds—and the enduring importance of electoral integrity.
