Volta Council of State rep urges chiefs to unite and demand action on development projects

The Volta Region’s representative on the Council of State, Dr. Gabriel Kwamigah Tanko Atokple, has called on the Volta Regional House of Chiefs to present a united front in engaging government on the region’s pressing development needs.

Speaking at the General Meeting of the House in Ho, Dr. Atokple stated that coordinated advocacy between traditional leaders and government structures is essential to push forward projects that have long remained on the drawing board.

“Our strength lies in unity. When we speak with one voice, we increase our chances of getting the attention and action our people deserve,” he said.

He proposed a formal engagement with President John Mahama to prioritize three major projects critical to the region’s economic growth:

Volta Harbour Project

Dr. Atokple highlighted the harbour project as a key driver of trade, job creation, and regional development. He stressed that its realization would position Volta as a strategic hub for commerce and transportation.

Operationalization of Ho Aviation Training School

He called for the immediate activation of the aviation school, describing it as a missed opportunity for technical education, investment, and regional visibility.

Agricultural Mechanization

Acknowledging the region’s strong agricultural base, he noted that mechanization would modernize farming practices, increase productivity, and create sustainable livelihoods—especially for the youth.

Dr. Atokple also expressed appreciation to the President for directing a $30 million Chinese grant toward the construction of an automotive market in Aflao, describing it as a positive step that reflects responsiveness to the region’s needs.

However, he urged the chiefs not to relent in demanding the fulfillment of other commitments made to the Volta Region.

“It is time to move from promises to delivery. These projects are not luxuries—they are long overdue investments in our future,” he stated.

He further encouraged the House to explore sustainable income-generating ventures to reduce dependence on government support and enhance its institutional stability.

“Let us think strategically about self-sustenance. This will allow the House to function more independently and effectively,” he added.

Dr. Atokple reaffirmed his commitment to representing the region’s interests on the Council of State and pledged to continue pushing for results at the highest levels of governance.

“Together, let’s work toward a Volta Region that is economically vibrant, culturally grounded, and united in purpose,” he concluded.
