Factions inevitable, manage them well – Dr. Solomon Fokuo Kwarteng advises NPP leaders

Political analyst and Head of the Entrepreneurial Department at Kumasi Technical University, Dr. Solomon Fokuo Kwarteng, has stated that factions are an unavoidable reality within every political party and must be managed wisely to ensure unity and stability.

Speaking to journalists in Kumasi on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, Dr. Kwarteng emphasized that no political organization, regardless of its strength, can eliminate internal factions.

He explained that diverse interests, ambitions, and loyalties naturally give rise to factions within large political groups like the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Reflecting on the just-ended NPP National Delegates Conference held in Accra, Dr. Kwarteng noted that the event highlighted both the strengths and challenges facing the party as it prepares for future elections.

He commended the party leadership for successfully organizing the conference despite underlying tensions.

He urged NPP executives at all levels to adopt firm yet strategic leadership to handle internal disagreements, adding that ignoring or mishandling factionalism could lead to deeper cracks that might affect the party’s electoral fortunes.

“Factions, if well-managed, can bring healthy competition and innovation. But if left unchecked, they breed disunity and weaken the party’s front,” Dr. Kwarteng cautioned. He advised party leaders to create platforms for dialogue and reconciliation to bridge differences among rival camps.

Dr. Kwarteng also called on party members to put the broader interest of the NPP ahead of personal ambitions. According to him, loyalty to the party’s ideals should always supersede loyalty to any individual factional leader.

Touching on the political climate ahead of the 2028 elections, the analyst warned that the NPP must remain vigilant and not allow internal strife to give their opponents an advantage.

He urged party faithful to rally behind their leaders and work together towards a united front.

Dr. Kwarteng appealed to the youth within the party to channel their energy into constructive engagements and innovative ideas that will strengthen the NPP’s chances in future polls.

He reiterated that the success of any political party lies in its ability to manage internal differences while remaining focused on its core mission.
