A lecturer at the University of Ghana Political Science Department, Dr. Joshua Jebuntie Zaato, has criticised President John Dramani Mahama over the discontinuation of criminal cases against members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Dr. Zaato, who is also a member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), claimed the President has abandoned his much-touted anti-corruption drive, Operation Recover All Loots (ORAL).
Speaking on Accra-based TV3’s New Day on Wednesday, July 23, about the withdrawal of financial crimes charges against former Finance Minister Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, the policy analyst said the NDC government is now pursuing what he calls “Operation Clear All Loots.”
“Based on this letter from the Attorney General, we have moved away from Operation Recover All Loots to Operation Clear All Loots.
“How do you see this and get deterred? How do you see this and then realise, ‘Oh my God, don’t let me steal. Don’t let me be corrupt.’ How does this letter deter you?” he asked.
His comments follow the Attorney General’s decision to discontinue a financial crimes case against Dr. Duffuor and seven others, citing significant recoveries of alleged losses.
The Attorney General’s office explained that a 60% recovery threshold has been adopted as a benchmark to guide decisions on prosecuting similar cases.
