The Ashanti Regional Police Command has launched an investigation into the fatal shooting of Abdul-Malik Azenbe, who served as both the Kusasi Chief of the Ashanti Region and the Kaadi Divisional Area Chief in the Upper East Region’s Binduri District.

In a statement sighted by GhanaWeb, the police gave details of its preliminary investigations into the shooting and killing of the chief, which happened on Tuesday, July 23, 2025.

The statement released on July 23, 2025, by the police, which described the chief as a “middle-aged man” without mentioning his name, noted that he was shot by two men.

It stated that the victim succumbed to his injuries at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

“Preliminary investigation indicates that the victim, a middle-aged man, was fatally shot by two unidentified assailants. The suspects, each riding on a motorbike, reportedly approached their victim and opened fire at close range before fleeing the scene.

“The victim was initially rushed to the Manhyia District Hospital and later referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where he was unfortunately pronounced dead. His body has since been deposited at the Ebenezer Mortuary in Tafo for autopsy,” part of the statement reads.

The police also stated that a team of police officers led by the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe, has recovered two empty shells suspected to be from an AK-47 assault rifle from the crime scene.

It went on to assure the public that the person responsible for the “heinous crime” would be dealt with.

A report by Kumasi-based Otec FM indicated that the Ashanti Region Kusasi Chief was shot on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at approximately 8:40 p.m. near the Asawase F-Line Community Centre.

According to eyewitnesses, two unidentified gunmen arrived at the chief’s residence on a motorbike, with one of them wielding an AK-47 rifle.

The armed man fired several shots at the chief before both suspects fled the scene.
