‘I haven’t switched camp; I’m behind Bawumia’ — Napo

The 2024 Vice Presidential Candidate of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as Napo, has reaffirmed his loyalty to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the party’s upcoming flagbearer race.

He dismissed claims that he had defected to support former Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, describing the rumours as false and unfounded.

Speaking to 1957 News’ Nene Odompleh on Friday, July 25, Napo said it would be an act of betrayal to abandon Dr. Bawumia, who chose him as running mate during the 2024 general elections.

“It’s not true. I’ve not moved from any camp to any court. I remain where I am. Can I be ungrateful to Dr. Bawumia after he made me his running mate? What kind of human being would be so ungrateful? I have not moved to any camp,” he stated.

Napo, who previously served as Minister for Education and later Energy, also noted that he has been focused on helping to unify the party and rally support behind whoever emerges victorious in the January 31, 2026 flagbearer election.

“What I’ve done is to try and unite the party behind whoever emerges as the flagbearer. There’s only going to be one flagbearer, and my experience from the last election wasn’t the best,” he explained.

He expressed concern about past internal attacks within the party and urged members to prioritise unity as the NPP prepares for the 2028 general elections.

“Some people who were not aligned with the chosen flagbearer said things that didn’t help the party, and I hope it doesn’t happen again. That’s why the party has learned lessons and decided to choose the flagbearer early, so we can heal and focus on winning 2028,” he added.
