The Electoral Commission (EC) has scheduled September 2, for the Akwatia by-election.
Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Rashid Computer Tanko, disclosed this on TV3 Ghana Tonight with Martin Asiedu-Dartey.
In response to a question about why the NDC issued a prompt notice to open nominations for individuals to contest in the primaries ahead of the EC’s official announcement, Mr. Rashid Tanko stated that the party was not in a hurry to jump the gun.
According to him, the EC held an IPAC meeting on Friday, June 25, during which it scheduled the filing of nominations for August 5 to 7, with the by-election set to take place on September 2.
“So we are not jumping the gun. We are just following the discussion at IPAC today and the timetable as given to us by the Electoral Commission,” he said.
The NDC has issued guidelines and a timetable for the Akwatia Constituency Parliamentary Primaries. Party members and prospective aspirants interested in contesting have been invited to submit their nominations.
The party has set July 28 for the opening of nominations, July 30 for submission, vetting, and balloting, with appeals scheduled for July 31. The primaries are expected to be held on August 4.
