Amaniampong SHS sets record with 82 points in Ashanti qualifiers to reach 4th straight NSMQ nationals

In one of the most remarkable performances of the 2025 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) regional qualifiers, Amaniampong Senior High School in Mampong, Ashanti Region, has booked its place in the national championship for the fourth consecutive time, with a record-breaking 82 points, the highest score recorded so far in the Ashanti Regional qualifiers.

Central to this success is the school’s dedicated quiz coordinator, Isaac Banyala Junior, whose hard work and commitment have become the backbone of Amaniampong’s consistent progress in the competition.

Affectionately known as “Onipa” by students, Mr Banyala has played a vital role in the team’s preparation, sacrificing time and comfort to coach the contestants late into the night.

“Our coordinator is the best. He gives us all the books and equipment we need, and even when he punishes or scolds us, it pushes us to be better,” a contestant shared.

Students recalled how Mr Banyala would stay with them from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., offering academic support and mentorship.

“Even I couldn’t stay that long. Around 10 p.m., I get sleepy, but he stays and teaches. He’s a very hardworking man,” another team member added.

Reacting to the students’ praise, Mr Banyala expressed pride in the team’s performance and progress.

“I feel good. These boys have done very well. Despite some obstacles, they’ve performed. I’m happy,” he said. “I believe in giving my best. That’s why I do my work with all my heart.”

The team showed strength in every round of the contest, earning 28 out of 36 points in the Speed Race and completing a clean sweep in the Riddles Round.

Despite a slight dip in the True or False segment, their commanding score was more than enough to beat Agric Nzema SHS (22 points) and Prince of Peace Girls’ SHS (18 points).

Looking ahead to the zonal championship, Mr Banyala says his team is well-prepared and focused.
“A step at a time. We’re preparing for any school and praying that we can excel in the quarterfinals during the nationals.”
