The Municipal Director of the Narcotics Control Commission in Awutu Senya East, Madam Sandra Tetteh, has raised serious alarm over the increasing use of synthetic drugs among youth in Kasoa and its surrounding areas.
Addressing participants during an engagement session, Madam Tetteh described the development as deeply troubling and urged swift and coordinated intervention.
“This disturbing trend,” she noted, “requires urgent attention if we are to protect the future of our young people.”
She revealed that the Commission will soon introduce a number of measures, including the establishment of drug-free clubs and focused sensitisation efforts in ghettos and zongo communities, aimed at educating young people about the devastating consequences of drug abuse.
In addition to targeting high-risk communities, the Commission will extend its educational campaign to social venues such as pubs, restaurants, and entertainment spots, encouraging patrons to be vigilant and involved in the collective effort to fight substance abuse.
Supporting the Commission’s outreach efforts, the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Philis Naa Koryoo Okunnor, donated GHC 5,000 to bolster ongoing anti-drug programmes.
She further assured the Commission of her personal commitment to the cause. “I am fully committed to supporting the Commission’s work and ensuring that we reclaim our communities from the grip of drugs,” she said.
The MP’s visit to the Commission forms part of her broader strategy to safeguard the youth of Kasoa—who make up 76 percent of the municipality’s population—from the growing threat of narcotic abuse. She stressed the need for joint action. “Tackling drug abuse is a shared responsibility that requires collaboration between community leaders, security agencies, and residents,” she said.
The Narcotics Control Commission and the MP’s office have pledged to strengthen their partnership in the fight against drugs, with a renewed focus on prevention, rehabilitation, and community engagement. Together, they aim to create a safer and drug-free environment for all residents of Awutu Senya East.
