Attorney General Dr Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine (L) says Chairman Wontumi will be charged soon Attorney General Dr Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine (L) says Chairman Wontumi will be charged soon

The Attorney General and Minister for Justice has disclosed that all is set for the prosecution of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, who is the subject of investigations by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.

Speaking at the Office of the President’s Government Accountability Series on Monday, July 28, 2025, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine disclosed that both the CID and EOCO have completed their investigations involving Bernard Antwi Boasiako, alias Chairman Wontumi.

He indicated that his office has drafted the charges against Chairman Wontumi and the other accused persons in the investigations and has sent them for review to the relevant offices before the cases are sent to court.

“The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has completed investigations in respect of Chairman Wontumi and the former National Buffer Stock Company CEO, Mr Abdul Wahab Hanan, and their accomplices.

“The results of both investigations will be announced very soon. The Police CID have also completed a docket on the Akonta Mining case and submitted same to my office,” he said.

He added, “We have prepared charges and sent them back to the Police CID for the suspects to be formally charged before their arraignment in court in the coming days. Ladies and gentlemen of the media, my fellow countrymen and women, in conclusion.”

The CID is investigating Wontumi over allegations that his company, Akonta Mining Limited, was “undertaking mining operations without a licence, polluting water bodies, and entering a forest reserve without authorisation.”

EOCO also arrested and detained Wontumi for several days before releasing him on a bail of GH¢50 million. Even though EOCO did not state why it arrested Wontumi, the Deputy Attorney General and Minister for Justice said he (Wontumi) is under investigation for multiple criminal offences.

These include fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering. In a statement posted on social media on Thursday, May 29, 2025, Dr Justice Srem Sai revealed that Wontumi, who has been in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) since Tuesday, is also implicated in a second strand of investigation linked to a broader international organised crime scheme.

The Deputy Attorney General emphasised that EOCO is collaborating closely with international law enforcement partners to probe this complex network of alleged criminal activities.
