‘Don’t go and take anybody’s money to offer him the Mampong stool’

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has issued a stern warning to the kingmakers of the Asante Mampong stool on the selection of the next Asante Mamponghene.

Speaking at the Asanteman Council meeting on Monday, July 28, 2025, the Asantehene issued the guidelines that are to be followed for the selection of the next Asante Mamponghene.

The king indicated that after the paramount queen mother and kingmakers of the Mamponghene settle on the candidate to be the next Mamponghene, the name of the person must be submitted to a committee of chiefs he has set up.

The members of the committee include the Akuamuhene, Adontenhene, Ankobiahene, and the paramount chief of Nifa-Afigyase.

The Asantehene indicated that if the committee have no issues with the candidate of the queen mother and the kingmakers of Mampong, the person would be the occupant of the stool.

“If you choose a candidate, inform the Adontenhene first. He would, in turn, speak to the members of the committee. You are just to present the name to them. If you present the name and any of the members of the committee want to see the person, they would ask you to present him to them.

“Afterwards, they are going to speak about the legitimacy of the person and if they have no issues with the person, he will be given the stool,” Otumfuo Osei Tutu II said.

“You, the elders, have no right to go and take money from any royal in order to give the person the stool. Nobody has that power,” he added.

The Asante Mampong stool became vacant following the demise of Daasebre Osei Bonsu II.

Daasebre Osei, who was once the regent of the Asante Kingdom, passed on in May 2025 after his 28 years rule as Asante Mamponghene.

The paramount chief of Mampong is the second most powerful person in Asanteman, being the occupant of the silver stool of the Asante Kingdom.
