The Ghana Education Service (GES) has assured parents and stakeholders that all final-year students affected by the conflict in Bawku will be fully supported to take part in the upcoming West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on July 29, 2025, GES Public Relations Officer, Daniel Fenyi, said the safety and academic future of students remain the top priority of the Service.

“The assurance I can give to all parents and stakeholders who are affected or closely following this issue is that these students will write the WASSCE exams. There will be no disadvantage to them,” he stated.

He described the situation in Bawku and surrounding areas as ‘very, very difficult,’ especially following violent incidents that claimed lives.

In response, students from Bawku and Nalerigu were evacuated to ensure their safety.

“When we recorded instances of deaths, we quickly stepped in to ensure that human life is, first of all, protected because students must be alive before we even consider the WASSCE exams,” he indicated.

With WASSCE practicals scheduled to begin within a week, GES is engaging stakeholders to finalise arrangements for the affected candidates.

Fenyi said a concrete decision on examination centres is expected by the end of the week.

He also highlighted the psychological impact of the violence, noting that some students are traumatised after witnessing the death of colleagues.

As a result, GES is enhancing counselling services for both students and teachers to support their mental and emotional well-being.

Fenyi added that the Service is working closely with the Ministry of Education, regional education directorates, and security agencies to assess whether students can return to their schools or need to be relocated to safer centres.

He noted that while current efforts are focused on final-year students, GES is also exploring support for other learners affected by the crisis.
