Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has officially declared his intention to contest the party’s flagbearer slot ahead of the 2028 general elections—marking his third attempt at leading the party into a national poll.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, Agyepong positioned himself as the candidate best equipped to heal divisions within the NPP and restore public trust.

“Let us not weigh down this party any further with a choice that will require continuous reconciliation and healing. With me, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, we chart a path to unity and genuine renewal,” he said.

He took direct aim at the growing trend of vote-buying and the influence of money in internal party elections, urging delegates to reject inducements and focus on principle.

“Politics belongs to the grassroots, not to the entitled few,” he declared, calling on party members to uphold the values on which the NPP was founded.

Agyepong rallied the party to support what he described as a clean and values-based campaign. “A pair of clean hands, a clear mind, and a compassionate heart”—that, he said, is what NPP needs in its next leader.

He also extended an olive branch to former Trade Minister Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, who broke away from the party in 2024. Agyepong encouraged him to return to the fold, reminding all members that “the NPP was built on sacrifice, not privilege.”

With this announcement, Agyepong joins what is expected to be a competitive field for the party’s 2028 presidential ticket. His message, however, is clear: he wants to lead a return to the NPP’s founding ideals, anchored in unity, honesty, and service.
