Al-Azhariya Islamic cluster of schools in deplorable state: Teachers call for renovation

The Al-Azhariya Islamic Cluster of Schools, a long-standing educational institution located in the Tafo/Pankrono Municipality of the Ashanti Region, is in dire need of infrastructural overhaul, as both teachers and students grapple with deteriorating facilities that threaten the quality of education.

Established in 1968, the school has not undergone any major renovations in its over five decades of existence. Today, broken roofs, eroded compounds, and cracked classroom floors paint a grim picture of the learning environment.

The school’s roofing, made from old zinc sheets, is riddled with holes and battered patches. Though authorities recently attempted to address the situation by purchasing new sheets to patch the worst-affected areas, the temporary fix has proven ineffective. Heavy rains often disrupt lessons, leaving classrooms soaked and unsafe.

Severe erosion of the school compound has also created a rough and dangerous surface, putting students at risk of injury during play and transitions between classes.

At a recent graduation ceremony held on school grounds, Abdulai Yushawu, Headmaster of Al-Azhariya Islamic Primary A, appealed for government and stakeholder intervention.

“I’m yet to see any major renovations in this school, especially concerning the roofing and flooring. There are several cracks in some of the classrooms. The school was established around 1968, so we’re hoping to see some renovations this year,” Yushawu stated.

He added that during a visit to the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), assurances were given that steps were being taken to address the school’s challenges.

Yushawu believes that a complete roof replacement would not only improve safety but also enhance teaching and learning outcomes.

The MCE for Tafo/Pankrono and guest of honour at the graduation, Abubakar Sadiq, acknowledged the dilapidated state of the school’s infrastructure. He pledged the assembly’s support through internally generated funds and the District Assemblies’ Common Fund.

“The issue is widespread. I visited Tafo/Pankrono M/A, St. Benedict’s, among others, and they all have the same problem. As part of our common fund, we’ve dedicated some of the money to construct about four classroom blocks for most of the schools. It’s a gradual process,” he explained.

He added that the assembly is also appealing to the Ministry of Education for additional support to fast-track repairs across the municipality.

Mr. Sadiq also raised alarm over the rising incidence of drug abuse among the youth in the municipality. He disclosed plans to crack down on drug dens, in collaboration with local law enforcement, to rescue affected youth and restore order.

“We’re planning targeted operations to address the issue of drug abuse. The well-being of our youth is paramount,” he said.

As the new academic year approaches, educators, parents, and community leaders are hoping that promises made will be fulfilled, ensuring that students of Al-Azhariya Islamic Cluster of Schools can learn in a safe and dignified environment.
