Mahama’s economic policies are betrayal in disguise — Atiwa West MP

The Member of Parliament for Atiwa West, Laurette Korkor Asante, has taken a swipe at the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration, describing its economic direction as a betrayal of public trust.

According to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lawmaker, the John Mahama-led government is delivering “economic betrayal” disguised as sound economic policies.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament during the debate of the mid-year budget review, the MP accused the government of failing to fulfil its promise to establish a women’s development bank to support Ghanaian women.

“The NDC, when they were in opposition, said they would reduce taxes and ease burdens. But what we are seeing is actually economic betrayal dressed up as economic policy. Economic betrayal dressed up as economic policy,” she repeated.

“This government promised a Women’s Development Bank as a flagship intervention to support our women, but what we heard was that only GH¢51 million — a paltry GH¢51 million — was going to be used as seed money. Even that, we haven’t heard anything more about this Women’s Development Bank,” she stated.

The Atiwa West MP further said, “Nothing was mentioned in this budget review for the women’s bank. To set up a bank in Ghana, you need a minimum of GH¢400 million as capital. Mr. Speaker, we were told that legal frameworks were being worked on, that preparatory work was underway. But six months down the line, there is no bank, no legal structure, no implementation plan, not even a mention in the mid-year budget.”
