Outrage on social media over ‘daughter of murderer comment’ by NPP MP

Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings and her late father Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings and her late father Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings

A comment made by a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority caucus, and directed at the Member of Parliament of Klottey Korle, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, which has been described as unsavoury, has triggered widespread outrage and public outcries on social media.

During discussions on the 60th anniversary of the death of Joseph Boakye Danquah (JB Danquah) on the floor of the House on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings stood up to seek permission to contribute.

However, the Speaker ignored her and instead granted the floor to the Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin.

In a disturbing moment, a voice from the Minority side hurled a deeply derogatory remark at Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, referring to her as the “daughter of a murderer” and ordering her to sit down.

Another unknown MP, also believed to be on the Minority side, followed up, claiming, “But there is evidence that her father killed people.”

The inappropriate comments have been widely condemned by some Ghanaians as ‘disgusting’ and ‘unworthy,’ with many arguing that they were used as a jab or insult towards the Klottey Korle lawmaker merely to score cheap political points.

They further argue that such language should never have been considered or used, given the decorum and honorable integrity expected of Parliament and its members.

Additionally, they have emphasised that Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings did nothing to warrant the baseless attack on her character.

Some critics have also vehemently called for a retraction and an apology from the Minority caucus, as well as for the unidentified lawmaker who made the insulting comment to be held accountable.

Calling Zanetor ‘daughter of murderer’ is extreme. The minority needs to heal from the unprecedented defeat

“Daughter of a murderer” deɛ the person no force kraa. She has nothing to do with the crimes of her father. Make no mistake, I love that we are not whitewashing that man, but the sins of the father can’t be visited on the children. The person should apologise to her

— Stoichkov (@akwasi_stoich) February 5, 2025

All Zanetor Rawlings does is mind her business. The NDC people don’t even like her like that. The comment was very inappropriate https://t.co/y6u4BEYTS9

The MP who used unprintable words for Zanetor needs to be sanctioned. That’s unparliamentary.

— Ato (@tsatsuRED) February 5, 2025

There was no point in calling Zanetor ‘daughter of a murderer.’ Absolutely no reason to scream that in Parliament. It’s unnecessary! You people need to stop the nonsense Ramos job and the equalization you’re doing on the TL.

— Kwadwo Sheldon (@kwadwosheldon) February 5, 2025

Naah, this one? They never tried! And don’t even mention John Dumelo saying the same thing to Maa Lydia as some kind of equalization. This is unacceptable! https://t.co/Uw9X0k4K93

— Kwadwo Sheldon (@kwadwosheldon) February 5, 2025

Oh an MP just spoke into the mic in Parliament “daughter of murderer sit down. Na sɛ obiaa nim sɛ ne Papa kum nipa” on the floor or Parliament as the Minority speaks

The person was referring to to Dr Zenator Agyemang Rawlings

— Austine Woode (@obiMpenaAustine) February 4, 2025

It’s because Zanetor is quiet because it can’t be me, you will take it back and never disrespect me again

— Twinkle🫶 (@danniee_x) February 4, 2025

Wait what happened in Parliament today? Minority took their nonsense to Dr Zanetor? 😳😳😳
