Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu has urged members of the committee set up to plan the National Education Forum to discuss financing arrangement for the Fee Senior High School (SHS) programme.

Mr Iddrisu made the call when he swore-in the eight-member Committee appointed by President Mahama on February 4.

The Education Minister tasked the committee to also proffer solutions in linking education to industry in order to produce a vibrant and competent youth for the job market.

“We are struggling with how to finance Free Senior High School, can your committee help in finding answers as to how we can sustain this laudable initiative and make sure that when we pledge that we will provide feeding timely and quality and in the right quantities, we do so?” he said.

The sector minister also emphasized on the need for improved tertiary education in the country.

“Tertiary education, how is the country Ghana responding to the future aspirations of our country and how are we situating the provision of higher education and satisfy the generic general academic requirement of our universities.

“I would like you to pay particular attention to the numbers, the country almost a decade ago was busy implementing the Free Senior High School, residential academic structure not academic enough in any of our public universities, you have 150 to 300,000 Ghanaian students who will naturally have aspirations to taste higher education and tertiary education how prepared are we?” he noted.

On February 2, President John Dramani Mahama appointed an eight-member committee to organize the National Education Forum.

The Committee, led by Professor George K. T. Oduro, former Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, has been given two weeks to submit a comprehensive report and action plan.

This initiative aligns with President Mahama’s pledge to improve education policy and stakeholder engagement

Other committee members include distinguished academics and professionals such as Professor Goski Alabi, Professor Rosemary Bosu, Samuel Awuku, Ph.D., Professor Smile Dzisi, Kofi Asare, Stephen Owusu, and Inusah Shiraz.
