Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, Minister-designate for Health, says the Mahama-led National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration will establish the Mahama Care Fund.

According to the Juaboso Member of Parliament and former Ranking Member of the Health Committee of Parliament, the fund will be used to support the treatment of chronic diseases.

Speaking during his appearance before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Friday, January 31, the ministerial nominee emphasized that the NDC government will deliver on its promise of free primary healthcare.

“We will establish the Mahama Care Fund to support the treatment of chronic diseases. We [NDC] have promised free primary healthcare, and we will ensure that it is indeed free,” he said.

NDC’s 2024 health sector campaign promises:

The party, while in opposition, promised to establish the Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund, dubbed “MahamaCares,” to help cover the cost of healthcare for persons with chronic diseases such as kidney failure (dialysis), cancer, sickle cell disease, diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease.

The free primary healthcare policy, which will be implemented from CHPS compounds to the polyclinic level in the short to medium term, was also promised, along with the expansion of health infrastructure to facilitate the prompt employment and timely deployment of health workers.

The NDC also pledged to provide affordable accommodation within the premises of health facilities and offer home ownership schemes for health and other workers.

Additionally, the party promised to introduce “Risk Exposure Insurance” for health workers to provide financial protection and support in the event of injuries, illnesses, or other risks encountered on the job.
