Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, Minister-designate for Health, has revealed that the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) owes not less than ¢237 million.

The Juaboso MP and former Ranking Member of the Health Committee of Parliament made this disclosure during his appearance before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Friday, January 31.

“Per my briefing, we have arrears of not less than ¢237 million, but when I get to the ministry, I will inquire whether or not there is a positive balance,” he said.

The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) is a publicly funded healthcare system established by the Government of Ghana in 2003.

The programme was introduced to provide equitable access and financial coverage for basic healthcare services to Ghanaian citizens.

While the system has contributed to making Ghana’s health insurance coverage one of the highest in Africa, funding challenges continue to threaten its sustainability.
