Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has ordered the removal of all mining equipment from forest reserves within the next two weeks.

He made the announcement during his first media address since assuming office, held at the Regional Coordinating Council on Thursday, February 6, 2025.

Dr. Amoakohene stressed the urgent need to safeguard the region’s natural resources, particularly its rivers, which have been placed under a 14-day ban on mining activities. This directive forms part of broader efforts to curb illegal mining, commonly known as “galamsey,” which has long plagued the region.

During his media engagement, the minister emphasized that clearing mining equipment from forest reserves would help prevent further environmental degradation and protect the region’s biodiversity. His commitment to tackling galamsey has been widely welcomed, with stakeholders recognizing his efforts to collaborate with other regional ministers to address the issue.

As the Ashanti Region continues to face the challenges posed by illegal mining, Dr. Amoakohene’s leadership and dedication to environmental conservation are expected to play a crucial role in mitigating its impact. The removal of mining equipment from forest reserves marks a significant step toward protecting the region’s natural resources and promoting sustainable development.
