Ghana must rise above divisions to lead Africa’s future – Dr Agumenu

Former special aide to late President Jerry John Rawlings, Dr Donald Agumenu, has called for national unity and a renewed focus on Ghana’s place on the global stage following the 2024 General Elections, which saw John Dramani Mahama return to power with an overwhelming parliamentary majority.

Reflecting on Ghana’s political history, Dr Agumenu highlighted the country’s progress from the pre-colonial era through neocolonialism to the establishment of the Fourth Republic. “This journey has not been easy, and it is essential for us as a nation to come together and redefine the future of Ghana collaboratively,” he stated.

Dr Agumenu, who served as the NDC’s Volta Region Director of Special Duties during the elections, stressed the need for industrialization, economic innovation, democratic reforms, and financial empowerment to dominate national discourse.

He urged Ghana to move beyond divisive politics and reclaim its role as a trailblazer of Pan-Africanism.

On Ghana’s political trajectory, Dr Agumenu compared the 2024 elections to the 1979 Revolution led by Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings. He described the latest election as a democratic revolution, emphasising that “while the 1979 uprising was a people’s revolution led by junior military officers, the 2024 election was a revolution driven by the people through the ballot box.”

Despite the challenges Ghana has faced, Dr Agumenu expressed confidence in the country’s resilience. “Thankfully, due to the grace of God, the strength of the constitution, and the resilience of modern Ghanaian social structures, any potential spontaneous reactions were avoided. Ghana has faced significant challenges on multiple occasions but ultimately emerged unscathed.”

Dr Agumenu, who previously contested the NDC primaries for Ketu North, remains an influential figure in Ghanaian politics, advocating for policies that promote national progress and global recognition.
