Scenes from the police station at Ejura Scenes from the police station at Ejura

Some youth in the Ejura Sekyedumase community of the Ashanti Region went on a rampage on Saturday, January 11, 2024, burning the police station and other buildings in the area.

A video from the scene, shared by Kumasi-based Luv FM, shows the police station and other structures of the police quarters completely burnt to the ground.

Some of the youth were seen pelting stones and other objects at the police, amid gunshots.

Details of the incident gathered by GhanaWeb indicate that the youth attacked the police station after an individual died while in police custody.

The police reportedly arrested the deceased on Friday, January 10, 2025 for purchasing a stolen phone. The alleged thief was nowhere to be found, so the police detained the individual.

The following morning, the police discovered the youth died in his cell. Without consulting the deceased’s family, they sent the body to the Mampong morgue.

When the family visited the station to follow up on the case, they discovered that the individual was dead and his body was already at the morgue.

This infuriated the youth of Ejura, who then set the police station, including the quarters, on fire.

Reports indicate that personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces have been deployed to bring the situation under control.
