Minority Leader and Effutu Member of Parliament, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has donated GHS100,000 to the Effutu Health Directorate to support efforts in curbing the ongoing cholera outbreak.

The Ghana Health Service has confirmed three deaths and 29 positive cases currently under management. Presenting the donation on behalf of the MP, former Municipal Chief Executive Alhaji Zubairu Kassim urged residents to actively participate in an upcoming clean-up exercise aimed at eliminating cholera in Winneba.

Residents have commended Afenyo-Markin for his continued commitment to improving healthcare in the municipality. He has also called on the Ministry of Health to release urgent resources to the Effutu Municipal Health Directorate to prevent the outbreak from worsening.

In a letter dated February 11, 2025, Afenyo-Markin raised concerns over the rapid spread of the disease, reporting a total of 412 suspected cases and three fatalities. He noted that key health facilities, including the Winneba Municipal Hospital, Winneba Health Centre, and the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) Clinic, are struggling under the pressure of rising infections.

He further stressed that the outbreak has placed an immense strain on local health facilities and personnel, particularly in coastal communities where infections are surging.

The MP has urged the Health Minister to provide immediate financial and logistical support to aid sanitation efforts, fuel costs, medical supplies, and public health education campaigns.

He remains hopeful that swift intervention will help protect public health and prevent further loss of life in the affected areas.
