Court orders police to ascertain age of suspect in goat stealing case

The Dansoman Circuit Court has ordered the police to send an accused person to the Police Hospital to ascertain his real age.

The accused, Fatawu Issaka, is said to have gone to one Osei Asibey Poku, the complainant’s house at Awoshie in Accra to steal two goats.

The prosecution claimed the accused was 20 years old, but his appearance (physical structure) showed otherwise, hence the order of the Court.

The Court presided over by Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit, did not take his plea and adjourned the matter to February 19, while Issaka was detained in a correctional home.

Issaka is being held on charges of conspiracy to commit a crime and stealing.

Meanwhile, Issaka’s accomplices known as Aziz Moro and one Godsway, are said to be at large.

Complainant Osei Asibey Poku is a facility officer and resides at Awoshie Market in Accra.

Accused Fatawu Issaka is a motorbike mechanic residing at Awoshie.

On February 5, this year, the complainant was asleep around 1:48 am when he heard his dog barking.

He became suspicious and from his window, he saw the accused and two others at large, standing beside his fence wall.

The prosecution said the complainant then called in some neighbours on the phone, including Alfred Boateng, and other witnesses in the case who helped and finally surrounded the accused and the two at large.

When the complainant and the witness were questioning the suspects, Aziz and Godsway managed to escape, leaving Fatawu.

The accused was eventually arrested and brought to the station and during police interrogation, he admitted that he came to the complainant’s house with Aziz and Godsway currently at large to steal goat, but he had no idea whether they had some or not because he was standing at the entrance of the complainant main gate whiles his accomplices scaled the wall to pick the goats.

The Police accompanied by the complainant and accused Issaka Fatawu, visited the crime scene and when a search was conducted, a sack containing two dead goats was found at the corner of the complaint wall.

The accused at the scene identified the dead goat in the sack as the animal they stole and killed in the compound.

Police intelligence gathered during the investigation indicated that the accused is an alleged notorious criminal, who has been arrested and brought to almost all the police stations within the division for various offences.

The accused during Police interrogation and in his cautioned statement, admitted the offence of having conspired with the other two suspects at large to commit the crime.

Meanwhile, a manhunt for the two other suspects is on course as the investigation continues.
