A Ghanaian student at the University of Lincoln, Prince Komla Bansah, has highlighted the severe financial struggles faced by students on government scholarships abroad due to inconsistent funding from the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat (GSS).
Speaking on the issue on JoyNews’ The Law on Sunday, February 16, Mr Bansah explained that while some universities have bilateral agreements with the Ghanaian government allowing flexibility in fee payments, many institutions do not, leaving affected students at risk of being locked out of their academic systems.
“For those schools that don’t have such agreements, students are in a very big problem. If the GSS defaults on payments, the university has every right to block you from accessing academic resources, and you are left to fend for yourself,” he said.
He noted that certain universities, such as Brunel University, have arrangements allowing a grace period for tuition payments. However, others, like the University of Lincoln, do not, making students vulnerable if funds are delayed.
His concerns echo the struggles of many Ghanaian students abroad who face academic disruptions, financial burdens, and even the risk of deportation due to unpaid fees.

He therefore called on the government to urgently address these challenges and ensure that all sponsored students receive the necessary support to complete their education.
