The Ghana Police Service has arrested Kelvin Aboagye, the General Manager of Elmina Sharks, following an alleged attack on a referee during a Division One League match between Elmina Sharks and Swedru All Blacks.

The incident occurred on February 16, 2025, at the Nduom Sports Stadium in Elmina, Central Region.

According to police reports, Aboagye, along with other individuals, physically assaulted the match referee and some supporters after the game concluded.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear, but authorities have confirmed that Aboagye is in police custody, assisting with investigations.

Law enforcement officials have also launched a manhunt to apprehend the remaining suspects involved in the altercation.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has yet to comment on the incident, but this development is expected to reignite discussions about violence in Ghanaian football and the need for stricter measures to protect referees and match officials.

Meanwhile, the police have assured the public that all culprits will be brought to justice.

Just two weeks ago, Yaw “Pooley” Frimpong, a devoted supporter of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, was tragically stabbed to death during a league match between Kotoko and Nsoatreman at Nsoatre.

The shocking incident cast a dark shadow over Ghanaian football, sparking outrage among fans and calls for stricter security measures at match venues.

This past weekend, the One-Week Observation funeral rite for the slain supporter was held, drawing mourners from across the football community.
