The Central Regional Director of Education, Mr. Emmanuel Essuman, has announced the Ghana Education Service’s (GES) preparations to pilot the introduction of the Chinese language into the school curriculum across the country.

He noted that Chinese language education has become an important addition to the educational landscape in the Central Region. He further highlighted the role of the Confucius Institute at the University of Cape Coast (CIUCC) in enhancing the region’s academic offerings.

Mr. Essuman made these remarks at the inauguration of a regional training center for local teachers in West African countries, an event attended by students from primary, basic, senior high, and tertiary institutions.

He expressed confidence that the training center would play a crucial role in equipping local teachers with the skills and knowledge needed to teach the Chinese language effectively, thereby fostering cultural understanding and collaboration between Ghana and China.

According to him, “The Central Regional Directorate of Education affirms its commitment to working with CIUCC in selecting pilot schools, rolling out, and fully implementing the program.”

Mr. Essuman disclosed that, in the near future, every child in the Central Region would have access to Chinese language education, enabling them to connect globally.

“It is worthy to note that Chinese language education has provided an opportunity for students in the Central Region not only to learn a second language but also to pursue degrees in Chinese, access scholarships in China, participate in global competitions such as the Chinese Bridge, and secure employment in Chinese enterprises,” he stated.

He added that the new secondary education curriculum allows students to select international languages as part of their electives, emphasizing that “Chinese is one of the languages available for study.”

Expressing his deep gratitude to the Confucius Institute for its unwavering support, Mr. Essuman commended the institute’s efforts in establishing Chinese language clubs in senior high schools across Ghana.
