Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has urged President John Dramani Mahama to reconsider his decision to revoke appointments and recruitments made after December 7, 2024.
On February 11, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah issued a directive ordering all heads of government institutions to cancel appointments made after the said date, citing noncompliance with good governance norms.
The statement also instructed heads of institutions to submit a report on their operations by February 17, 2025.
Reacting to the decision, the 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer described it as ironic that a government which campaigned on promises of jobs for all Ghanaians is now dismissing workers, rendering them jobless.
In an open letter to President Mahama, Dr. Bawumia argued that the least the new administration could do was create jobs to address unemployment, rather than take away the few opportunities people had.
“It is ironic that a party which campaigned on the wings of jobs for all Ghanaians is arbitrarily dismissing the same Ghanaians, rendering them jobless, just because a different government employed them to put their talents to bear on the nation’s development and earn income to cater for themselves and their families.
“The least a party that campaigned on jobs could do under conditions of unemployment is to also innovate and create jobs rather than dismiss people,” reads part of the letter.
Meanwhile, the government, through the Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has explained that the decision was based on the fact that such appointments were “hurriedly arranged” without recourse to due procedures, with some even bypassing vetting.
