Founding President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has advised the leadership of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to be measured in their responses to certain pertinent issues in the country.
The policy advisor said while the NPP has every right to criticize, they must do so while admitting they were worse when given the opportunity to govern from January 2017 to January 2025.
In a social media post on Thursday, February 20, Mr. Cudjoe added that the main opposition party should also acknowledge that despite underperforming while in power, the country must move forward.
“The leadership of the NPP must be measured in all their responses to some critical issues happening now. They must speak up and not be silenced, but when they do, they should quickly add, ‘We were far worse and could have done better when we had power, but let us make progress going forward,’” wrote the IMANI boss.
Sharing a similar sentiment, media guru and legal practitioner Sampson Lardi Anyenini said in a Facebook post, “If you are not a consummate journalist, CSO professional et al., it may be difficult to sympathize with the NPP as they complain about wrongs, especially regarding Akufo-Addo regime appointees/recruitments. They are so terribly guilty of these and not fit to cast the first stone.”
He added, “So, your first reaction when you read and hear them each day cry foul over things they may have done worse might be to shout, ‘Shut up, hypocrites!’”
This comes after the NPP, which recently left power, began criticizing the current administration led by John Dramani Mahama over issues such as the dismissal of public sector staff recruited after the December 7 general elections.
Other concerns raised by the NPP include alleged attacks on journalists and military raids on the homes of former NPP appointees — incidents the party’s 2024 flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, describes as reminiscent of a military takeover.
