Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader in Parliament, has called on the government to provide the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) more funding for it to successfully carry out its mandare.

The Effutu MP brought up the matter on the floor of Parliament on Friday, February 21, and urged Samuel Nartey George, the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, to come before the House and explain the government’s intentions to provide sufficient assistance for the state-owned broadcaster.

“Mr. Speaker, if it’s about resources, I would again want the Leader of Government Business to program the Minister of Communication and Digitalization to come to this House to brief us on steps that the ministry is taking to resource GBC,” he stated.

Afenyo-Markin emphasized the importance of GBC, particularly GTV, in providing excellent and educational programming to all sections of the country, even remote locations.

He added that without the requisite financial and logistical backing, the station may struggle to continue operating.

“They have very nice programmes, especially their Breakfast Show, very educative. And if GBC does not get the support, they are likely to collapse. We don’t want that to happen,” he warned.

The Minority Leader’s comments amid concerns over what they describe as the sidelining of state-owned GTV in favour of the pro-NDC media outlet, Woezor TV.

People argue that the exclusive rights to cover events at the Presidency, originally granted to GTV, are gradually being taken away.
