A devoted supporter of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Yaa Pokuaa, popularly known as Obaa Yaa Race Course, has recounted a distressing experience involving an alleged fake cheque she received from the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) under the Nana Addo-led administration.
Obaa Yaa, a well-known trader in Kumasi’s Central Business District, narrated that in 2020, she applied for a MASLOC loan to expand her business. After meeting all the necessary requirements, she received a call from the MASLOC head office informing her that her loan had been approved. She was instructed to travel to Accra to collect a cheque, which she could cash at Omni Bank.
“I applied for a loan of GH₵20,000, but when I went to the MASLOC office, they gave me a cheque for GH₵19,500.
“Though I didn’t get the money I requested, I was not bothered because I needed the money badly for my business,” she stated.
However, her relief turned into frustration upon returning to Kumasi. When she attempted to withdraw the funds at Omni Bank, she was told there was no money in the account.
“When I complained to MASLOC officials, they referred me to Ghana Commercial Bank to withdraw the money. I went there but was told by the tellers that there was no money in the account. I went there three times and was told the same story,” she narrated.
Feeling deceived, she reached out to senior NPP officials, including Chairman Wontumi and Nana B, hoping for assistance. However, her concerns were ignored.
“I formally informed Chairman Wontumi, Nana B, and other top Ashanti regional and national executives of the party, but they brushed the matter under the carpet,” she stressed.
During the interview, Obaa Yaa Race Course broke down in tears for nearly two minutes as she recalled her years of loyalty to the NPP, only to be rewarded with what she described as a fake cheque.
